is an inert plastic material with a specific gravity lower than that of water capable of floating just above the ion exchange bed.
It is primarily used in counter-flow regenerated plant such as air hold-down and packed bed systems.
It has been developed for use as an upper layer in packed bed ion exchange systems. In particular, it prevents the finer active resin from reaching the strainer nozzles at the top of the bed. In downflow service / upflow regenerated systems, its course particle size allows some insoluble matter trapped within the resin bed during the loading cycle to be passed out during regeneration.

The use of a layer of IP-1 also improves the distribution of water and the collection of the spent regenerant in the top part of the vessel.
